Camera Drone Buying Guide for India: The 250 g Rule, Specs and Budgets
Buying a camera drone in India starts with one number — 250 g — and then a short list of specs that separate footage you can use from footage you delete. This guide covers the rules, the specs, the budget bands and the Indian-made options.

Start with the weight: the 250 g line
In India the single most important number on a camera drone is its take-off weight. Under India’s Drone Rules 2021 a drone of 250 g or less is nano class: it needs no registration, no Unique Identification Number and no Remote Pilot Certificate for recreational flying. Cross 250 g and you are in the micro class (up to 2 kg): the drone must be registered on DigitalSky and carry a UIN, and any commercial use needs a pilot certificate. That is why almost every consumer drone — DJI Mini, IZI Brephos Mini, IZI Mini X — is built to 249 g, and why the “under 249 g” label is a feature, not a limitation.
Two more rules apply to every class: fly only in green zones (about 90% of India’s airspace, shown on the DigitalSky map; yellow zones near airports need permission, red zones are off limits), and keep below 120 m (400 ft). Rules are being redrafted — check DigitalSky before a trip.
The specs that actually matter
- Sensor size beats megapixels. A 1/1.3″ sensor (Brephos Mini, DJI Mini 4 Pro class) shoots usable footage at dusk; a 1″ sensor (Brephos, Air-class drones) is a real step up in low light; a 1/2.3″ or 1/3″ sensor is a daylight camera. “48 MP” on a small sensor is a quad-Bayer mode, not four times the detail.
- Gimbal. A mechanical 3-axis gimbal is what makes video look like video; electronic stabilisation (EIS) alone crops the frame and still shows wobble. Two-axis gimbals need EIS for the third axis. Budget drones with a “camera that tilts” have no stabilisation at all.
- Video. 4K at 30 fps is the useful minimum; 4K60 lets you slow footage down. Bit-rate and a flat colour profile matter more than headline resolution once you edit.
- Flight time per battery is 25–35 minutes on a good drone; Fly More combos with two or three batteries and a charging hub are worth it because a single battery is one short session.
- Transmission range and system. The kilometre figures (4 km, 20 km, 24 km) are line-of-sight maxima; what matters day to day is a digital link that holds a clean 1080p feed at 500 m behind trees. You must keep the drone within visual line of sight in India anyway.
- GPS and return-to-home. GPS hold, automatic return on low battery or lost signal, and precise landing are the difference between a drone and a flyaway.
- Obstacle sensing. Downward sensors for landing are standard; forward, backward and all-round vision sensing appear on mid-range and up. Worth paying for if you fly indoors or near trees.

Indian options
IZI, from Gurugram, is the Indian brand in the sub-249 g class, with pan-India service and no import wait: the IZI Mini X Nano (4K, 20 MP, 3-axis gimbal, 31 minutes, 4 km link, GPS return-to-home) is the entry point; the IZI Brephos Mini (1/1.3″ 48 MP sensor, 4K, 34 minutes, 20 km IZI R7 link, low-light mode) matches the DJI Mini 4 Pro class; the full-size IZI Brephos (1″ 48 MP sensor, 4K60, obstacle avoidance, 24 km link) is the creator’s drone. Camera drone or FPV drone?
A camera drone flies itself steady while you frame the shot; an FPV drone is flown through goggles for speed and acrobatics, and its footage comes from an action camera on top. If the goal is cinematic travel footage, real estate or a family holiday, buy a camera drone. Before the first flight
- Register on DigitalSky if the drone is over 250 g, and check the zone map for where you plan to fly.
- Update firmware, calibrate the compass away from metal, and let the GPS lock (10+ satellites) before take-off.
- Set the return-to-home altitude above the tallest obstacle around, then test RTH at close range.
- Fly the first battery in a wide open field in the morning, when winds are lowest.
